The book "Summer of '42" was also made into a movie and is a touching story of coming of age
in America's first summer of WWII. 15-year-old Hermie, Oscy and Benjie from Brooklyn spend the
summer on an island off the coast of Maine. It is about their yearnings, their misadventures,
their fumblings with the fairer sex. It's obvious, that Hermie is the author, Herman Raucher.
Benjie discovers a "sex manual" and then warns his buddies not to paw the book, because "his
mother might check for fingerprints". They attempt to pick up dates at the entrance to the
local movie theater. Once inside, Hermie tries to "get some". Hermie then falls in love with
a young war bride named Dorothy on the beach one day. Her husband is an Army Air Corps officer
flying over Germany. Hermie's budding relationship with Dorothy materializes, when one day she
learns, that her husband was killed in action. When Hermie runs into 22-year-old Dorothy at the
market and offers to carry her grocery bags home, their passions unravel. Dorothy is his first
love and the one, he will never forget. Summer of '42 is one of those beautiful, but rare novels,
that an entire generation discovers and stays with them a lifetime.
